Here at Porter Ridge we firmly believe that our season comes down to more than just wins and losses. Taking an educational view, our job is to help each and every player progress in their skill level, all whilst having fun. We want to take players on a journey from the start to the end of the season, where they have developed pre existing skills and gained new ones.
By choosing to play at PRAA you will learn valuable life lessons, character traits and much more outside of the sport itself. We heavily emphasize good sportsmanship, self confidence and improvement through hard work. Winning games is not considered to be our primary objective. We consider winning to be the result of the application of good technical skills and tactics, working in tandem with good sportsmanship.
U5-U14
Season Dates: August - November (Fall) & February-May (Spring)
Welcome to our entry level of youth soccer. A high emphasis is put on the fundamentals of soccer, while having fun with your team mates. Players sign up to play during the registration window, no try-out required.
U9-U10
Season Dates: August-May
Think of this level as soccer school. The next stage of youth soccer. Academy Soccer has an emphasis of teaching and learning, gearing players to get ready to play at a higher level. At this age players commit to the club for the full year and attend assessments in May to make the team.
U11-U19
Season Dates: August-May
The highest level of competition in North Carolina Youth Soccer. Players tryout for prospective teams in May each year.
Rec, or Recreational Soccer, is our entry level into the beautiful game. REC Soccer has a heavy emphasis on the teaching and learning of the fundamentals of soccer, all while having fun! We have age divisions all the way from U4, up to U11/12 for the Fall 2021 season. All teams practice at Hemby Bridge Elementary , some once a week (U4 and U6) and some twice (U7 and up). All REC Soccer players U7 and up compete in the Union County Youth Soccer League . Teams typically play 8 games in the regular season, with an end of season tournament held at Optimist Park, Weddington.
Our In-House Teams (U6) , will receive a participation trophy at the conclusion of the season.
This is a group training for children who have not played soccer before. The ages are 2.5 - 4. We will meet once a week at Hemby Bridge from 5:30-6:15pm. They practice once a week as a group and parents are needed to participate with their child during these practices. Teams practice 8-10 times through the season, depending on the weather. There are no teams or games at that level. The focus will be on introducing soccer to the kids in a fun and exciting way. This is to get the players ready for our next League, U6.
This League is geared towards players 4 & 5 years of age There are teams & games at this level. These players are placed on teams and they will practice once a week with their team & coach. The games are played at Hemby Bridge Elementary Soccer Fields on Saturday mornings during the season. The teams will play against other PRAA teams. They will play 5v5 with no goalies. The approach here is to develop foot skills: Dribble with all sides of both feet, Dribble out of trouble, Dribble past someone, Soft first touch, proper passing skills and spacing. This will allow them to make a seamless transition to our next League, U7-COED.
This League is designed for 6-7 years old players who enjoy playing and want to improve their skills and experience. At this stage we emphasize striking the ball properly, Positions, Rules of Game, Spacing, Shooting, Dribbling, Body Movement, Field Vision, Eye-foot coordination and Goalkeeping. By end of U8 players should capable of Dribbling skills including, Dribble with all sides of both feet, Dribble out of trouble, Dribble past someone, Stopping and running with the ball at speed, Shield the ball with body from other players, Demonstrate a soft first touch (including trapping), Demonstrate basics of proper shooting technique, Demonstrate basics of proper passing with reasonable accuracy at 8-12 yards, Very basic tactical skills such as, Maintaining position but moving with play (not chasing the ball everywhere it goes), Moving forward and spreading out when attacking, Retreating and become more compact when defending, Basic quick, coordinated movements with and without the ball. This allows the players to make a seamless transition to our next League, if the parent and player so chooses. Teams practice twice a week and play games on the weekend, typically with 8 games in a season.
This is designed for players who want to continue playing recreational soccer. These leagues will practice twice a week with their coaches and teams and play in the Union County Soccer League. We will still emphasize the basics as there is still learning and coaching that must be done. Teams at 9U Start with 8v8 including a goalkeeper but progress to bigger numbers on the field as the teams get older. The players now move into gaining a more rounded understanding of the game. Positional awareness, vision and decision making becomes the focus of instruction. Players tend to find 'their position' at this age.
The United States Soccer Federation’s US Youth Soccer Best Practices Guide.
This League is designed for the parents and players who have an interest in moving forward with game of Soccer. Teams practice twice per week and games are played on only Saturdays against other Club Teams in the Charlotte Region. We build on the experience the players gained in the earlier leagues with the goal of refinement and skill improvement. Our aim is to create a positive environment for players, coaches, and families. Focus on individual player development and instill a love and passion for the Game of Soccer that encourages players to work with the ball on their own time. Coach Basic Game Understanding while educating Parents and set expectations. Teams practice twice per week (75 minute practices). Approximately per 6-8 play dates (12-14 games per season) / Academy Showcase (Tournament).
Fall Season starts in August and ends in November.
Classic soccer is the highest level of competition within NCYSA. Our Classic players and coaches demonstrate a high level of commitment to excellence in skills, fitness, work ethic, attitude and sportsmanship. All Classic Soccer players must try-out annually each May for the following season.
